Column Goes Halfway Over the Hill with Humor

Los Angeles, CA (ContentDesk) June 21, 2004 -- When a close friend celebrated her 50th. birthday by scheduling Botox treatments, Jena Ball was bemused.
When her mother complained about all the junk mail trying to sell her burial plots, electric wheelchairs, and hearing aids, she laughed.
Then a cashier at the local deli gave her a senior discount 15 years too early and she realized that old age stereotyping was getting out of hand."Some major debunking needed to be done," says Ball, "and I decided I was the one to do it."The result was "Halfway Over the Hill," a humorous, 600-word column that has been running in Southern California papers for six months, and is now available nationwide. From the start, the column has been a hit with readers who like Ball's amusing approach to the topic of aging."I really, really like your column," says Valerie Haecky of Santa Cruz.

"It offers a wonderful shift in perspective.""Thank you for your column," writes Jane Weissman of Pasadena.
"I reinvented my life at 48, went back to school, and became a nurse at 52.
I'm now 58 and on my third career. Hardly a day goes by that a coworker doesn't tell me how good I'd look if I'd just dye away the gray and use pancake make-up. My response has been, just as you said, that I've earned every wrinkle and gray hair, and have no intention of doing away with them.

So, you've validated the opinions of the men in my life and supported my satisfaction with being able to relax with who and what I am. Thank you again.""Just a note to say how much I'm enjoying your articles," says Barbara Krystich of La Canada.
"Nice to know that there is someone who feels the same.
Can you imagine a nation of 50 ? 72-year-old Barbie doll wanna bes walking around?
The thought has me laughing as I write this.
Please keep similar columns coming!"But Ball hasn't confined herself to the elderly set.

"People of all ages do funny, puzzling, and downright nutty things all the time," she says.
"My job is to capture those things in a way that helps people laugh and see themselves in new and thought provoking ways."
To date she has tackled a wide range of subjects including public displays of eccentricity, defensive driving, evolving tastes, senior dating, and thongs. With the number of older Americans increasing dramatically as the baby boomers begin entering their early 60s (by 2030 it is projected that one in five people will be 65 or older) the timing for a column like Halfway Over the Hill couldn't be better.
"People in my generation," says baby boomer Debra Weber, "don't want to read about our bodies falling apart.
We want to celebrate life, and that's just what Jena's column does."
Jena Ball is a freelance journalist with more than 20 years experience penning everything from weekly restaurant reviews and business profiles to feature articles and travel/adventure essays.
She is also the founder of an online school for journalists called "The Nature of Writing" (http://www.thenatureofwriting.com).

When not writing and teaching she gives talks and does interviews about the subjects covered in her column. Halfway Over the Hill will be available nationwide starting June 21st.

Work From Home - Fun With Telemarketers

Copyright 2005 Elaine Currie

During the time I have spent working at home, I have encountered many telemarketers.
That's how I found out about their radar: when I went out to work telemarketers always rang in the evening while I was trying to cook or eat dinner, now they ring during the day when I am trying to work at home.

A joke that arrived in my email made me realise that I am not alone in being less than fond of telemarketers.
(In fact, they are on my list right up with lawyers and estate agents.)
I'll be sharing a few tips from this joke with you throughout this article but, if you want to read all 20 of them, you can see them at my website on the same page as this article.

I can usually identify telemarketers immediately because they will almost inevitably open with "Good morning, madam.
How are you today?"
Nobody but a telemarketer would dream of ringing a person and addressing her as "madam"...

Remember This: Tips to Help Improve Your Memory

To understand how memory might be improved, it is a smart idea to learn about how memory works and fails. A small structure in the brain called the hippocampus is the nerve center for memory formation. That's where the crucial switching from short-term to long-term memory takes place through a process called "consolidation." Most memory diseases involve the steady deterioration of consolidation, so it may be easier to call on ancient memories and not be able to store any new ones. Can anything be done to enhance your ability to store memories? Five tips that generally improve memory are:

  1. Deal with stress. Continuous stress produces chemical by-products which inhibit memory.

  2. Get enough sleep. Dream or REM sleep gives your brain the opportunity to process new information and consolidate learning.
  3. Eat for memory. Certain foods are thought to improve memory performance. They include fish such as salmon and tuna, eggs, beef, chicken and bananas.

  4. Exercise....

What You Should Know about Children's Hearing Aids

It is estimated that more than 1 million children in the U.S. have some form of hearing loss. Even if hearing loss is not very severe, this impairment in children can have a profound affect on their educations. Some children with hearing impairments may be mistaken to have learning disabilities, or assumed to be defiant or downright stubborn. Even with more and more hospitals screening newborns for hearing loss, still slip through the cracks.

Parents may not even be aware of a slight loss of hearing until other problems develop.

Fortunately, for both parents and children, many models of child hearing aids are available to consumers. The first step is to have your child evaluated by an audiologist. This specialist can determine the level of hearing loss in the child and recommend solutions and aids to help them. Children as young as a week old have been reported to have received hearing aids.

The same models offered for adults are available...
